Shiripuno Amazon Lodge

From $400

per person

Explore the Amazon with the local Waorani people who live inside the Yasuní National Park.

Shiripuno Amazon Lodge, located deep in the Yasuní National Park, provides a rare opportunity to explore the richness of flora and fauna, while being in contact with one of the most fascinating indigenous tribes that inhabits this lush rainforest: The Waorani. These people, plus your personable naturalist guide, will share their understanding about plants that cure a variety of diseases, trees that provide the building materials of their environmentally friendly community and wildlife ready to catch your eye while it roams freely in the largest playground on earth, boasting an ecosystem more diverse than anything you’ve ever encountered. Sure enough, being so isolated from modern civilization, this paradise will grant you the pleasure of being one with nature – and truly free to explore at your heart’s content!

Itinerary

5 Days

DAY 1. QUITO / COCA – SHIRIPUNO RIVER

Arrive to Coca by airplane (40 minutes) or bus (6 hours). From here we overland south to the Shiripuno Bridge in approximately 2 hours. After a hearty box lunch break, a motorized canoe takes us downstream to reach the Shiripuno Amazon Lodge in another 4 hours! On the way, you will feel how your five senses are submerged in the peaceful magnificence of the rainforest, teaming with life at every turn of the river. Here, unpredictability of what to encounter next makes of this experience a true expedition in its own right. (Lunch / Dinner)

DAY 2. FULL DAY OF ACTIVITIES

After breakfast we will hike for about 3-4 hours on the Magic Canopy Trail, with a stunningly expansive view of the Amazon Basin. Your naturalist guide, along with an authentic Huaorani native, will uncover the mysteries of the healing properties of plants, some whose chemical compounds have been replicated by modern means, but many more that hold the answers to the most challenging ailments. Though a good physical condition is required for this hike, our slow pace will guarantee us an in-depth understanding of this amazing region. (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)

DAY 3. FULL DAY OF ACTIVITIES

We can start the day very early before breakfast, like the natives do, when it’s best to spot many species of birds. Afterwards we will hike the El Saladero Trail, where the variety and abundance of flora attracts many species of animals that gather to lick clay walls to provide essential minerals and even antidotes against what would otherwise be toxic plants. After lunch, we hike back to the amazon lodge for some downtime. At night there will be an excursion to spot caimans, as well as other nocturnal creatures bordering the water’s edge. (Breakfast/  Lunch / Dinner)

DAY 4. FULL DAY OF ACTIVITIES

After breakfast, we will hike a different trail to encounter monkeys and other tree dwelling creatures. After lunch, the afternoon is reserved for bird watching from the comfort of a motorized canoe on one of the smaller rivers that form an “ox bow” lake. (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)

DAY 5. TRAVEL BACK TO QUITO

Today we navigate upstream to meet the actual Waorani Community. After some preliminary socializing, you will be able to enter a traditional house to examine their survival tools and gadgets, and try your aim with a real blow gun. A box lunch will be provided before continuing upstream to the bridge where you will take the bus back to Coca and from there back to Quito. (Breakfast / Lunch)
