Nuevo Mundo Expeditions / Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve

Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve

From $260

per person

Go bird-watching in the cloud forests north of Quito and marvel at the great number of hummingbirds.

The unbelievably exuberant cloud forest at Bellavista offers the finest nature exploration – a mere 2-hour drive from Quito.  This private reserve covers an area of over 700 hectares (1,700 acres) packed with birds that swarm over the most varied vegetation, including many of the 4,500 species of orchids that Ecuador proudly boasts, as well as hundreds of species of trees and bushes that harbor an extraordinary diversity of color and life.  Sure enough, year after year over 400 species of birds are recorded by Birdlife International in just 24 hours of scouting, granting the region a special place when it comes to biodiversity.  Yet getting there is also part of the fun – hence, our expert naturalists lead the way through forever-changing landscapes.  With regards to accommodations, there are a number of inviting rooms with private facilities and delicious food to fully enjoy your stay and to “charge your battery” while you get ready for each day’s activities.

Itinerary

3 Days

DAY 1. QUITO / BELLAVISTA CLOUD FOREST RESERVE

Early morning pickup in Quito to head towards the western Andean lowlands in time for breakfast at Bellavista and your first glimpse of hummingbirds soaring over orchids and other multi-colored flowers.  Following is an introductory hike with your naturalist guide to get acquainted with the various trails stemming from the main house into the forest.  The afternoon offers more exploration within this mysterious environment, ideal for nature photography, as you immerse yourself into the sights and sounds of these woodlands.  Sounds will change as the evening wildlife gradually sets in to embrace your sleep. (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)

DAY 2. FULL DAY OF ACTIVITIES

We welcome the day with a pre-dawn rise to hike the forest as it slowly comes to life, followed by a hearty breakfast. Then we’re off to a waterfall, with binoculars in hand, hidden deep in the forest, to see what our personable guides can spot with their trained naked eye. Once you are better acquainted with the environment, you are welcome to explore a self-guided trail where you will be one with nature. After lunch there are more trails to explore, accented by strangler figs, bromeliads, orchids, tree ferns, and more botanical treats from where its curious inhabitants are sure to be watching over you. The evening will be set aside to learn more about what you have seen this day over a cup of hot aromatic chocolate before bedtime.  (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)

DAY 3. MORNING ACTIVITY / QUITO

Just like the birds and other wildlife, we are again early risers to rendezvous with them, let alone catch a glimpse, for many species have yet to be identified to science. Choose from over 20 exciting trails and activities to further immerse yourself into the forest, literally! You can discuss the possibilities with our lodge personnel, always ready to cater to your very needs and interests. And as most Ecuadorians do, engage in a short siesta after lunch before backtracking up the Andes into the temperate life zone. Arrival to Quito is programmed for around 5 pm. (Breakfast / Lunch)
