A wonderful trek along the Peruvian Andes passing Mt. Salktantay in combination with Machu Picchu.
As you trek up and down the Andean slopes, the climate and vistas will change incessantly on this remarkable journey into the past. At the end of each day you will be rewarded with memories to last a life-time, and the challenge of convincing your friends back home that you did not make it all up! In short, this combination of sights and sounds, along with a professional ensemble of guides, porters, chefs and pack animals will make you feel like a true explorer.
DAY 1. Cusco - SoraypampaPick-up at your hotel for a 3-hour journey to the village of Mollepata (9,515 feet / 2,900 meters above sea level) for breakfast at a local restaurant, while food and camping equipment are gathered and loaded on horseback in preparation for our 8-hour hike. Half way on our route we stop at Cruzpata for lunch and downtime. The remaining 4 hours gets us to Soraypampa campsite at 12,631 feet / 3,850 meters above sea level. (Lunch / Dinner)
DAY 2. Soraypampa - QollPapampaToday is another wonderful 8-hour trek. Snow-capped Salkantay and Humantay are visible during the first half of this exciting sojourn before crossing the Apacheta Pass, our highest point at 15,091 feet (4,600 meters) above sea level. We descend to Qollpapampa with a lunch stop along the way. Once at the campsite at 10,170 feet (3,100 meters), we´ll enjoy a well-deserved soak in the local hot springs. (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)
DAY 3. Qollpapampa - LucmabambaWe trek down towards the warmer climate at the village of Lucmabamba, enjoying pristine flora and fauna in this semi-tropical jungle, including giant hummingbirds and wild orchids. We will also sample local passion fruits and oranges against a background of dramatic waterfalls. At 8,700 feet (2,650 meters) above sea level, your campsite will be set up. (Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)
DAY 4. Lucmabamba - Aguas CalientesWe continue our hike through coffee plantations to Llactapata, a mere 8,700 feet (2,650 meters) from where we can see the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in the distance. After lunch we hike for 2 hours to the hydroelectric station and board the train to the town of Aguas Calientes (45 minutes). Here we will be at 6,560 feet / 2,000 meters above sea level. After checking into our hotel and enjoying a hot shower, we will be ready to gather for dinner. (Breakfast / Lunch)
DAY 5. Aaguas Calientes - Machu Picchu / CuscoWe start the day with a typical Peruvian buffet breakfast before boarding the early bus up to Machu Picchu for a private tour, followed by time to re-enter and explore the ruins on your own. By noon, we will take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and then return to Cusco by train. (Breakfast) Consider doing a tour extension to Titicaca Lake.
