Quito and the Middle of the World

Gateway to Ecuador's wonders

Quito means "center", lying just 35 km (20 miles) south of the equator, at an altitude of 2,850 m (9,200 feet) above sea level. The city was well-established 1,500 B.C. Almost 3,000 years passed before the Incas, in 1487, invaded its fertile lands and was later established as a colonial capital by the Spanish conquerors in 1534. Its historical and cultural affluence made Quito, together with Krakow in Poland, the First World Cultural Heritage Site to be declared by UNESCO in 1978.
